from nether heats and burning waste
he turned in haste察and roving still
on starless waters far astray
at last he came to Night of Naught察
and passed察and never sight he saw
of shining shore nor light he sought。
The winds of wrath came driving him察
and blindly in the foam he fled
from west to east and errandless察
unheralded he homeward sped。
There flying Elwing came to him察
and flame was in the darkness lit察
more bright than light of diamond
the fire upon her carcanet。
The Silmaril she bound on him
and crowned him with the living light
and dauntless then with burning brow
he turned his prow察and in the night
from Otherworld beyond the Sea
there strong and free a storm arose察
a wind of power in Tarmenel察
by paths that seldom mortal goes
his boat it bore with biting breath
as might of death across the grey

and long´forsaken seas distressed此
from east to west he passed away。
Through Evernight he back was borneon black and roaring waves that rano'er leagues unlit and foundered shoresthat drowned before the Days began察
until he heard on strands of pearlwhen ends the world the music long察
where ever foaming billows rollthe yellow gold and jewels wan。
He saw the Mountain silent rise
where twilight lies upon the kneesof Valinor察and Eldamarbeheld afar beyond the seas。
A wanderer escaped from nightto haven white he came at last察
to Elvenhome the green and fairwhere keen the air察where pale as glassbeneath the Hill of Ilmarin
a´glimmer in a valley sheerthe lamplit towers of Tirionare mirrored on the Shadowmere。
He tarried there from errantry察
and melodies they taught to him察
and sages old him marvels told察
and harps of gold they brought to him。
They clothed him then in elven´white察
and seven lights before him sent察
as through the Calacirianto hidden land forlorn he went。
He came unto the timeless halls
where shining fall the countless years察
and endless reigns theElder Kingin Ilmarin on Mountain sheer察
and words unheard were spoken thenof folk of Men and Elven´kin察
beyond the world were visions showedforbid to those that dwell therein。
A ship then new they built for himof mithril and of elven´glasswith shining prow察no shaven oarnor sail she bore on silver mast此
the Silmaril as lantern lightand banner bright with living flameto gleam thereon by Elberethherself was set察who thither cameand wings immortal made for him察
and laid on him undying doom察
to sail the shoreless skies and e
behind the Sun and light of Moon。
From Evereven's lofty hillswhere softly silver fountains fallhis wings him bore察a wandering light察
beyond the mighty Mountain Wall。
From World's End then he turned awayand yearned again to find afar

his home through shadows journeying察
and burning as an island star
on high above the mists he came察
a distant flame before the Sun察
a wonder ere the waking dawn
where grey the Norland waters run。
And over Middle´earth he passed
and heard at last the weeping sore
of women and of elven´maids
in Elder Days察in years of yore。
gut on him mighty doom was laid察
till Moon should fade察an orb└d star
to pass察and tarry never more
on Hither Shores where mortals are察
for ever still a herald on
an errand that should never rest
to bear his shining lamp afar察
the Flammifer of Westernesse。
The chanting ceased。 Frodo opened his eyes and saw that Bilbo was seatedon his stool in a circle of listeners察who were smiling and applauding。
`Now we had better have it again' said an Elf。
Bilbo got up and bowed。 `I am flattered察Lindir' he said。 'But it wouldbe too tiring to repeat it all。'
'Not too tiring for you' the Elves answered laughing。 'You know you arenever tired of reciting your own verses。 But really we cannot answer yourquestion at one hearing'
`What' cried Bilbo。 'You can't tell which parts were mine察and whichwere the D┣nadan's'
'It is not easy for us to tell the difference between two mortals' saidthe Elf。
'Nonsense察Lindir' snorted Bilbo。 'If you can't distinguish between aMan and a Hobbit察your judgement is poorer than I imagined。 They're asdifferent as peas and apples。'
'Maybe。 To sheep other sheep no doubt appear different' laughed Lindir。
`Or to shepherds。 But Mortals have not been our study。 We have otherbusiness。'
'I won't argue with you' said Bilbo。 'I am sleepy after so much musicand singing。 I'll leave you to guess察if you want to。'
He got up and came towards Frodo。 'Well察that's over' he said in a lowvoice。 `It went off better than I expected。 I don't often get asked for asecond hearing。 What did you think of it'
`I am not going to try and guess' said Frodo smiling。
`You needn't' said Bilbo。 `As a matter of fact it was all mine。 Exceptthat Aragorn insisted on my putting in a green stone。 He seemed to think itimportant。 I don't know why。 Otherwise he obviously thought the whole thingrather above my head察and he said that if I had the cheek to make verses aboutE。rendil in the house of Elrond察it was my affair。 I suppose he was right。'
'I don't know' said Frodo。 `It seemed to me to fit somehow察though Ican't explain。 I was half asleep when you began察and it seemed to follow onfrom something that I was dreaming about。 I didn't understand that it wasreally you speaking until near the end。'
`It _is_ difficult to keep awake here察until you get used to it' saidBilbo。 'Not that hobbits would ever acquire quite the elvish appetite formusic and poetry and tales。 They seem to like them as much as food察or more。
They will be going on for a long time yet。 What do you say to slipping off forsome more quiet talk'
`Can we' said Frodo。
`Of course。 This is merrymaking not business。 e and go as you like察as

long as you don't make a noise。'
They got up and withdrew quietly into the shadows察and made for thedoors。 Sam they left behind察fast asleep still with a smile on his face。 Inspite of his delight in Bilbo's pany Frodo felt a tug of regret as theypassed out of the Hall of Fire。 Even as they stepped over the threshold asingle clear voice rose in song。

Frodo halted for a moment察looking back。 Elrond was in his chair and thefire was on his face like summer´light upon the trees。 Near him sat the LadyArwen。 To his surprise Frodo saw that Aragorn stood beside her察his dark cloakwas thrown back察and he seemed to be clad in elven´mail察and a star shone onhis breast。 They spoke together察and then suddenly it seemed to Frodo thatArwen turned towards him察and the light of her eyes fell on him from afar andpierced his heart。
He stood still enchanted察while the sweet syllables of the elvish songfell like clear jewels of blended word and melody。 `It is a song toElbereth' said Bilbo。 `They will sing that察and other songs of the BlessedRealm察many times tonight。 e on'
He led Frodo back to his own little room。 It opened on to the gar densand looked south across the ravine of the Bruinen。 There they sat for somewhile察looking through the window at the bright stars above the steep´climbingwoods察and talking softly。 They spoke no more of the small news of the Shirefar away察nor of the dark shadows and perils that enpassed them察but of thefair things they had seen in the world together察of the Elves察of the stars察
of trees察and the gentle fall of the bright year in the woods。
At last there came a knock on the door。 `Begging your pardon' said Sam察
putting in his head察 but I was just wondering if you would be wantinganything。'
`And begging yours察Sam Gamgee' replied Bilbo。 `I guess you mean that itis time your master went to bed。'
`Well察sir察there is a Council early tomorrow察I hear and he only got uptoday for the first time。'
`Quite right察Sam' laughed Bilbo。 `You can trot off and tell Gandalfthat he has gone to bed。 Good night察Frodo Bless me察but it has been good tosee you again There are no folk like hobbits after all for a real good talk。
I am getting very old察and I began to wonder if I should ever live to see yourchapters of our story。 Good night I'll take a walk察I think察and look at thestars of Elbereth in the garden。 Sleep well'
_Chapter 2_
The Council of Elrond
Next day Frodo woke early察feeling refreshed and well。 He walked alongthe terraces above the loud´flowing Bruinen and watched the pale察cool sunrise above the far mountains察and shine down。 Slanting through the thin silvermist察the dew upon the yellow leaves was glimmering察and the woven nets ofgossamer twinkled on every bush。 Sam walked beside him察saying nothing。 butsniffing the air察and looking every now and again with wonder in his eyes atthe great heights in the East。 The snow was white upon their peaks。

On a seat cut in the stone beside a turn in the path they came uponGandalf and Bilbo deep in talk。 `Hullo Good morning' said Bilbo。 `Feel readyfor the great council'
`I feel ready for anything' answered Frodo。 `But most of all I shouldlike to go walking today and explore the valley。 I should like to get intothose pine´woods up there。' He pointed away far up the side of Rivendell tothe north。
'You may have a chance later' said Gandalf。 `But we cannot make anyplans yet。 There is much to hear and decide today。'
Suddenly as they were talking a single clear bell rang out。 `That is thewarning bell for the Council of Elrond' cried Gandalf。 `e along now Bothyou and Bilbo are wanted。'
Frodo and Bilbo followed the wizard quickly along the winding path backto the house察behind them察uninvited and for the moment forgotten察trottedSam。
Gandalf led them to the porch where Frodo had found his friends theevening before。 The light of the clear autumn morning was now glowing in thevalley。 The noise of bubbling waters came up from the foaming river´bed。 Birdswere singing察and a wholesome peace lay on the land。 To Frodo his dangerousflight察and the rumours of the darkness growing in the world outside察alreadyseemed only the memories of a troubled dream察but the faces that were turnedto meet them as they entered were grave。
Elrond was there察and several others were seated in silence about him。
Frodo saw Glorfindel and Gl┏in察and in a corner alone Strider was sitting察
clad in his old travel´worn clothes again。 Elrond drew Frodo to a seat by hisside察and presented him to the pany察saying此
'Here察my friends is the hobbit察Frodo son of Drogo。 Few have ever ehither through greater peril or on an errand more urgent。'
He then pointed out and named those whom Frodo had not met before。 Therewas a younger dwarf at Gl┏in's side此his son Gimli。 Beside Glorfindel therewere several other counsellors of Elrond's household察of whom Erestor was thechief察and with him was Galdor察an Elf from the Grey Havens who had e on anerrand from C┴rdan the Shipwright。 There was also a strange Elf clad in greenand brown察Legolas察a messenger from his father察Thranduil察the King of theElves of Northern Mirkwood。 And seated a little apart was a tall man with afair and noble face察dark´haired and grey´eyed察proud and stern of glance。
He was cloaked and booted as if for a journey on hor
